The Source Tagging Certification lab was formed in 1991 as a result of the need to ensure consistency in tag placement and accuracy in label application for the supplier and retailer. The Source Tagging Lab provides the guidelines and recommendations that help ensure best performance, best detection and deactivation at the POS as well as the most efficient application processes to the supplier.
The unique success and many benefits of this free service have grown to include Labs in multiple countries to meet supplier deadlines. In addition to product certification for label placement, the Labs today also provide technical support, and customer training. When a product has been tested and certified, the Lab issues certification specs, documentation and pictures of proper location. These documents are returned with the products to the supplier.
Source Tagging Phases
Source Tagged labels may be applied in a number of different locations. This placement depends on the source tagging “phase” selected by the retailer, and the physical requirements dictated by the product or its packaging. There are three source tagging phases:
 |
Phase Three Source Integration. The label is inserted within the product or in its primary packaging, within a 3” radius of the UPC barcode. |
 |
Phase Two Internal source tagging. The label is applied inside the product packaging or directly on the product within the packaging within a 3” radius of the UPC barcode. |
 |
Phase One
Topical source tagging. The label is applied to the outside of the product package within a 3” radius of the UPC barcode. Only accepted by Retailers if no other solution can be achieved. |
Basic EAS and Source Tagging Training
The Source tagging lab routinely conducts lab tours and presentations providing our customers with basic EAS and Source Tagging training. Successful source tagging at the manufacturer level depends on a thorough understanding of the EAS label, and its relationship with the product and the EAS system. Retailers and manufacturers unfamiliar with EAS and Source Tagging programs may request information or help with:
- Theory of operation of EAS systems and source tagging
- Best practices in implementing Source Tagging at manufacturing level
- The "do’s and don'ts” of label application
- Factors that could effect label performance
Certification Lab Locations
Currently there are eight certified Source Tagging labs located around the globe. These labs certify thousands of products each month for regional and global suppliers.
