ADT’s New Sensormatic® Ultra•Tag™Global Platform Helps Cut Retail Theft up to 80 Percent While Boosting Point-of-Sale Productivity

Latin American Retailer Almacenes Éxito and North American Retailer Fred Meyer Stores Expand Versatile Anti-Theft Protection to More Merchandise Lines Yet Keep Customer Checkout Efficient

Boca Raton, Fla. – September 9, 2008 – Retailers worldwide are finding the Sensormatic Ultra•Tag solution from ADT can help protect broader merchandise lines, while using one detaching platform. Designed with extensive retailer input, this new line offers high security to help cut theft. What’s more, its easy application and removal helps boost checkout efficiencies, so customers can finish shopping faster.

Latin American retailer Almacenes Éxito successfully deployed the Sensormatic Ultra•Tag platform to help cut theft of bottled wines and spirits by more than 80 percent. With a retail footprint of 273 stores in 45 cities throughout Colombia and annual revenue of USD $2.9 billion, Almacenes Éxito required a solution that would help increase sales while reducing shrink.

According to Loss Prevention Manager Luis Castañeda, "The idea is to standardize across the entire company using this type of protection." He added that the Sensormatic Ultra•Tag platform has given Éxito the freedom to display products openly to customers, to standardize product displays and to reduce losses while increasing sales. “Our employees recognize the benefits of the Ultra•Tag’s easy application and removal, which helps boost their productivity,” he said. “Ultra•Tag’s compact design eliminated the need for them to realign shelving, which is a major disruption that larger tags could otherwise cause.”

In North America, Fred Meyer Stores adopted the same platform (but known as Ultra•Lite in North America) soon after its debut in spring 2008. A multi-line department store chain and division of The Kroger Company, Fred Meyer Stores serve customers in 129 U.S. locations across Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska. The chain needed a versatile Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) solution to help improve productivity at the point-of-sale (POS) while reducing theft of the most frequently stolen items

According to Scott Bringhurst, Vice President and Director of Loss Prevention for Fred Meyer Stores, “Our primary reason for selecting the Sensormatic Ultra•Tag solution was to improve POS throughput. With this solution, our stores are reporting very positive feedback on the ease of removing the tags resulting in improved front-end checkout efficiencies and most importantly enhanced customer satisfaction.”

Capable of protecting a wide variety of products ranging from bottled wines and spirits to sporting goods and apparel, the versatile, multipurpose Sensormatic Ultra•Tag platform offered Fred Meyer Stores an effective solution for protecting their diverse product line.  Additionally, the easy application and removal process saved employees time at the POS, expediting the customer checkout process and greatly improving customer satisfaction.

The Sensormatic acousto-magnetic technology in the Ultra•Tag security device provides superior detection capabilities and makes the tag highly resistant to detuning by such elements as metal, foil and liquids. With its rigid ABS plastic housing, the Ultra•Tag is a formidable theft barrier that helps to protect high-risk, high-value items.

“In addition to its ease of use, the Ultra•Tag provides high security with minimal impact to our merchandise presentations. The tag has been a major success in support of our loss prevention strategy,” added Mr. Bringhurst.

“Whether protecting delicate apparel, sporting goods or bottled spirits the Ultra•Tag product line offers unparalleled security. Retailers around the globe are embracing the operational efficiencies this versatile platform offers. ADT will continue to develop Sensormatic tagging solutions to expand merchandise protection capabilities for a variety of retail needs,” according to Jeffrey Bean, vice president ADT North American Retail Sales and Operations.
