ADT SHIPS MORE THAN 250 MILLION SENSORMATIC® FOOD AND DRUG
ANTI-THEFT LABELS SINCE 2003

Anti-theft labels tagged at the source help retailers control theft and maintain
profit margins

Boca Raton, Fla. – Sept. 23, 2008 – ADT announced today that worldwide shipments of Sensormatic anti-theft labels for source-tagging food and drugs have topped one quarter billion units. Since their 2003 debut, these labels have helped retailers control shrinkage of such high-theft categories as packaged meats, health, beauty and cosmetics, and general merchandise.

The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) reported that packaged meats were the most frequently stolen supermarket category in 2007 making up 19 percent of all losses. To protect this category, ADT provides Sensormatic Ultra•Strip® III Microwaveable Labels, which value-added resellers Sealed Air/Cryovac and Paper-Pak Industries conceal inside meat soaker pads used by retailers.

This way the pads can help not only protect the meat’s freshness and visual appeal, but also deliver hard-to-defeat, anti-theft protection with acousto-magnetic technology. Consumers, in turn, gain the convenience of being able to defrost meat in their microwave ovens without removing its packaging.

“Retailers recognize the dual benefit of the Sensormatic Ultra•Max label that can withstand the rigors of fresh meat packaging as a complement to our Dri-Loc® Pad technology,” said Richard Douglas, Sealed Air/Cryovac’s Marketing Director, Rigid Packaging and Absorbents.

For bottled vitamins, over-the-counter medicines and other food items, ADT provides the Ultra•Max® Capsule Label – the first anti-theft label approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration as well as Health Canada, the federal regulatory authority for the sale of pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices in Canada. This label is also the only one in the industry small enough to put inside bottles before they are filled. Packaged goods manufacturers use the label to help protect two other high-theft categories, as reported by the FMI: health/beauty/cosmetics, which make up 16 percent of 2007 supermarket losses, and general merchandise, with 11 percent of 2007 losses.

“Today’s tough economic climate means that, more than ever, retailers must safeguard their most high-risk packaged goods from theft,” said Jeffrey Bean, vice president ADT North American Retail Sales and Operations. “ADT’s line of Sensormatic labels tailored for packaged foods and drugs can deliver the source-tagging protection retailers need to control rising theft while helping them to maintain their profit margins.”
