We’re already deep into the holiday season, but there’s still plenty more to come if our predictions for the busiest days of the holiday rush play out as expected. Although December is in full swing, retailers may not want to consider their strategic planning done and dusted. Performance from the season so far can shed light on what might work in the coming days — and getting it right will be particularly important during the tail end of the season.

Though retailers are well-versed in holiday planning, it's important to keep in mind that timing is everything. And this year, the holiday shopping calendar may not align with the patterns to which retailers have become accustomed. After inching earlier and earlier over the past few years due to supply chain and availability concerns, holiday shopping this year is likely to be concentrated toward the end of the season, according to our historical data.

Perhaps the most unique feature of the 2023 holiday calendar is the timing of Super Saturday. The annual event — which falls on the last Saturday before Christmas — is always a bright spot for retailers, bringing in plenty of traffic and driving up sales totals one last time before the holiday passes.

However, this year, Super Saturday falls the day before Christmas Eve (December 23) — something that hasn’t happened since 2017, which was a very different time in retail. Due to this unique timing and the ways the industry landscape has evolved, retailers may need to prepare for an even bigger rush than they anticipated.
