Unacast’s Real World Graph® data engine powers social distancing patterns at county and state level to help retailers manage current marketplace and forecast recovery

NEW YORK, NY — (May 13, 2020) — Unacast, an award-winning location data and analytics firm, announced that it is making its Social Distancing Scoreboard and other mobility data insights available as part of the ShopperTrak brand offerings from Sensormatic Solutions, the leading global retail solutions portfolio of Johnson Controls.  Sensormatic Solutions will include insights powered by Unacast’s Real World Graph® data engine, to help retailers protect its employees, customers and assets in brick-and-mortar store operations and warehouses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sensormatic Solutions is adding Unacast’s opt-in, location-based data as a complement to ShopperTrak’s in-store Market Intelligence traffic benchmarking to provide insights to when and where retail will recover by understanding consumer mobility patterns and people’s comfort with public spaces. Unacast’s Social Distancing Scoreboard is an easy to reference dashboard which layers statistics related to new reported cases with changes in mobility and non-essential store visits, providing daily community grades (A to F) to help retailers evaluate reopening individual store locations across their enterprise.

Unacast’s Social Distancing Scoreboard, launched in mid-March, has been widely adopted by business leaders, public health experts, policy makers, academics and community leaders as a way to communicate the importance of social distancing, and to provide insights into current public behavior and unearth trends for future scenarios related to the spread of COVID-19 across states and counties in the United States. In addition to the US, Unacast recently expanded its toolkit to track social distancing behavior in more than 100 countries.

For its Social Distancing Scoreboard, Unacast applied geospatial human mobility insights with its proprietary tools to create an interactive map showing mobility trends by county or by state as a way to raise awareness of and reinforce the importance of social distancing in relation to slowing the spread of COVID-19.  The Scorecard’s A through F letter grade for all states and counties in relation to social distancing behavior uses three metrics that are then compared to the number of new COVID-19 cases reported in those areas to assign letter grades to help users draw conclusions between social distancing behavior and virus spread over time.

Unacast’s Social Distancing Scoreboard provides three key metrics:

  • Change in distance traveled prior to COVID-19 in comparison to present-day (areas that observe at least a 70% decrease in average distance traveled are assigned a grade of A, while those that exhibit less than 25% decrease or increase are assigned an F.);
  • Change in visitation to non-essential venues compared to a pre-COVID-19 period;
  • Change in human encounters, or the probability that two devices that were in the same place at the same time compared to a pre-COVID-19 period.

“We are honored to be included in Sensormatic’s offering to retailers along with ShopperTrak,” said Thomas Walle, CEO and Co-founder at Unacast. “We have seen how powerful our tools have been in helping businesses mitigate the pandemic spread. As the business world looks ahead to forecasting recovery, we’ve designed our insight offerings to help retailers guide critical decision making and planning in the most timely and accurate way possible.”

“As retailers look to restore consumer confidence in this new reality, our goal is to provide ways to understand shopper density within a store for compliance with social distancing guidelines or ordinances, and to meet maximum limits,” said Nick Pompa, global general manager, ShopperTrak. “We believe Unacast’s proprietary technology and approach can help our clients as they navigate an unprecedented and challenging business climate.”

Unacast developed the Covid-19 Toolkit with public datasets, as well as aggregate mobility and anonymous device data from tens of millions of devices. Unacast’s proprietary technology then extrapolates the results to show trends by county and by state. As with all Unacast technology, the Toolkit follows GDPR and CCPA guidelines.
