NEUHAUSEN, Switzerland—February 3, 2022—Johnson Controls today released the annual Sensormatic Solutions traffic and behavior trends recap for the 2021 holiday season around the world. This includes the period spanning from Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, through Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022. The annual recap is informed by retail traffic data analytics within the brand’s digital operating platform, Sensormatic IQ.

The final shopper traffic data showed that Sensormatic Solutions initial predictions for the global top busiest shopper traffic days aligned with the actual busiest days in stores. The full list of the actual busiest holiday shopping days in-store for the 2021 season can be found here.

Traffic for the full period was down -19.5% in the U.S., compared to 2019, the last pre-pandemic year. However, compared to 2020, shopper traffic for the full period was up 17.2% highlighting a progressively favorable outlook for retailers worldwide. Shopper traffic data in the U.S indicates that visits to physical stores for the 2021 holiday season accounted for 35.8% of the total season’s brick-and-mortar traffic.

“For the second year in a row, American shoppers started their in-store holiday purchasing earlier than in pre-pandemic years. Looking at the month of November, shopping was down -18.1% compared to 2019 and up 20.9% compared to 2020,” said Brian Field, senior director of global retail consulting, Sensormatic Solutions. “This indicated that consumers again attempted to beat the crowds, supply chain disruptions and product shortages by shopping early and did so at nearly double the rate as last year.”
